XL Prosteels - Super Bright, High Output

ProSteels are D'Addario's brightest, punchiest bass strings. Stainless steel wrap wire delivers a harmonically rich, brilliant high-end coupled with deep, tight lows that work in tandem to create the coveted "Piano tone" that bass players crave. Great for articulate fingering and aggressive picking, ProSteels deliver the extra edge and punch you need to cut through the mix.

All XL bass strings are precision wound on our state-of-the-art, digitally-controlled machines, ensuring each string has excellent intonation, clear fundamentals, and unparalleled consistency. Each string is wound with a nickel plated steel wrap wire known for distinctive bright tone with high magnetic output, delivering a universally appealing and versatile tone for all playing styles.

XL Coated Nickel - Bright, Coated for Long Lasting Tone & Lifespan

D'Addario EXP Coated Nickel strings are full-sounding, long-lasting strings that are designed to endure. EXP coated bass strings start with high quality nickel plated steel wrap wire, micro-coated for enhanced corrosion resistance and extended lifespan. This coated wire is wound over a hex-shaped, high carbon steel core, delivering the tone and sustain that our uncoated XL bass strings are known for.

XL Half Rounds - Smooth Feel Without Compromising Bright Tone

D'Addario Half Round bass strings are wound with pure nickel, then precision ground, leaving the outer surface smooth and semi-flat while retaining the flexibility of round wound strings. D'Addario's exclusive heat treating process ensures that Half Rounds retain their round wound brightness and sustain.

XL Chromes - Flatwound, Deep and Rich Tone

D'Addario Chromes Bass strings are wound with flattened stainless steel ribbon wire that is polished to an incredibly smooth surface. Delivering a distinctive damped but tone-rich sound that only flat winding can produce, D'Addario Chromes are the world's most popular flat wound strings for electric bass.

XL Nylon Tapewound - Tapewound, Deep Tone & Smooth Feel

Designed to produce a deep, warm tone with smooth feel, D’Addario Tapewound Bass strings are wound using a flattened black nylon that is polished to a smooth finish. These long-lasting, well-balanced strings are expertly engineered to provide optimal tension and are gauged to fit properly on standard bass saddles and nuts. Tapewounds may be used on fretted or fretless basses and deliver a vintage tone ranging from the thump of an upright bass to the focused depth of traditional flatwound strings.

I bought it for a fretless conversion project on my 2002-2003 Squier 5-string Standard Precision Bass (Special). After de-fretting the neck, it would have an oil-based finish on the board. You need some finish of course after all of the slot fillings and sanding. I want to get some more treble tones out oppose to the flatwounds. I wanted to initially use regular rounds, but it could potentially chew through the fingerboard. And I don’t want to spend hundreds for a fingerboard replacement. I know how the strings will sound as I already got a set for a 4-string fretless bass. It’s great for ballads and some pop music.

Transitioning from round to half is exactly what I was looking for in terms of feel and sound. It''s not overly bright, yet not overly warm. I will admit that I had to get used to the feel of the strings and they were a bit sticky when I first put them on but after playing for a few days it goes away. I think these are my new favourite strings, can''t see myself going back to rounds after using these.

FYI I''m using these on an Ibanez SR405QM

G, D, and A strings were fairly clear, about what should be expected from strings of this type. The E was quite dead, and the B was absolutely mushy sounding. Raking across the strings from high to low really highlighted their inconsistencies. I had a Ken Smith Slick Round .130 laying around, so replaced the B with it; that evened up the sound of the B string. Had to order a Smith .106 to replace the E, but now the tones are much more even. I''ll stick with the Smiths for this bass, a 35" scale. GHS Pressurewounds and Fodera strings are also good in my opinion, but are not as smooth and funky sounding as the ground wound strings. Everybody is different.

Short review: After having used different brands, gauges and types of strings on my 5-string electric bass, these are my favorites. Round wound strings were always too bright and extremely noisy; flat wounds are great for getting an upright bass tone (particularly on fretless and acoustic/electric basses); but for getting a smooth, well-balanced tone without the noise, half-rounds are the way to go.

I''m sorry to say that I was very disappointed with the quality of these strings, after putting them on my bass I noticed that I had lost a lot of sustain and volume from my low-B string, almost like my fingers were constantly touching it. After checking the bridge, nut and everything else I could think of I couldn''t solve the problem and put this bass down and pulled out an older bass I had as I needed something for practice for an upcoming gig. I finally went back to this bass determined to figure out the problem and loosened the low-B to check its seating in the nut again, once I had done that I re-seated the string and began to tune it up to tension again and *boom*, a one to two inch section of the string ''exploded'' (the outer winding of the string just seemed to burst open). I''m guessing this defect in the string is what was causing my strange sustain / volume problem.

Not too happy with this as my first experience with D''Addario''s, I haven''t returned the strings as I no longer have the original packaging therefore I guess I will have to chalk this one up to experience and steer clear of them from now on. I can understand that now and then problems will occur, but I''ve never had a string ''explode'' like that before and certainly not had issues with a string I hadn''t even played 30 minutes of music with.

D''Addario ENR71-5 Half Round 5-String Bass - I purchased these because 1) Local shops didn''t have the 5 string packs, they would sell me 4 with a 5th separate string and charge a fortune for the 1 string. Thankfully I was able to find the 5 string pack on Amazon! I bought these for my 5 string fretless, I was debating to get these or go for the full flats. I don''t like the feel of the flats myself, so these fit the bill perfectly! They have the nice ''thump'' of flats, while at the same time remaining bright and feel closer to round wounds. They have a nice grip to them, some people don''t like that, but I do! I will buy these again and again!
